St. Augustine of Hippo
St. Augustine of Hippo
What about St. Augustine's position on the interpretation of the Bible?
I am Catholic, but do not take the Bible literally but I'm not saying the Bible should not be believed, but must be read metaphorically, especially if it is in contradiction with scientific discoveries … St. Augustine held that the biblical text should not be interpreted as either literal, but metaphorical, because if it contradicts with what we know of Science and God has given us reason. While each passage of Scripture has a literal, this literal "sense" does not always mean that the Scriptures are simple story, sometimes they are rather an extended metaphor. For more information, please read: # To http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustine_of_Hippo Natural_knowledge_and_biblical_interpretation More information about the conflict between the Catholic Church and scientific discoveries, read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church_and_science
If the answer to any question about something that appears in the Bible is that it is metaphorical, then why bother with the Bible at all? that once supported a number Catholics in a corner on the issue of the Trinidad and vision related while Stephen was stoned to death. He clearly saw and said that Jesus was standing right (right) of the Father (God). If this were the case, then the concept of the Trinity is empty. The only answer was that Stephen was speaking metaphorically. Law. To me, that is as much of a cop-out (Instead of dealing with the dilemma), saying that something is a mystery if you do not have an answer. In my opinion (and why I am not Catholic), Catholics, in adopting the position that anything that contradicts Catholic _The decreases interpretation_ is metaphorical nature of religion and weakens its validity. Why bother with the Bible? Catholicism teaches its own dogma and believes that everything else would just be a metaphor? In other words, Catholics place more faith in the writings of man (like St. Augustine) that the teachings of Jesus. TD expected.
